The Importance of Giving Tuesday: A Lesson from Bull & Bear

The Importance of Giving Tuesday: A Lesson from Bull & Bear
03 Dec, 2024

Each year, the Tuesday following Thanksgiving marks Giving Tuesday, a global movement that reminds us of the power of generosity. While Black Friday and Cyber Monday spotlight spending, Giving Tuesday shifts the focus to helping others—an essential value we want to instill in our children.

Through Nolyne, my mission goes beyond teaching financial literacy; I aim to inspire children to build a better world. This is a theme woven into my picture book Bull & Bear Learn Piggy Bank’s Golden Rule. In this story, Bear discovers the importance of sharing his resources to make a positive impact, learning that money isn’t just for earning, spending, saving, and investing —it’s also for giving.

Why Giving is Essential in Financial Literacy

When I think of financial literacy for kids, most folks often focus on earning, saving, and spending wisely. However, giving is just as critical. It teaches empathy, responsibility, and the value of helping others. Children who learn the joy of giving early in life are more likely to grow into socially conscious adults who use their financial success to uplift their communities.

Lessons from Bull & Bear

In Bull & Bear Learn Piggy Bank’s Golden Rule, the characters learn that even small acts of generosity can create big changes. Whether it’s donating to a charity, sharing toys with friends, or helping a neighbor, the lesson is clear: giving enriches not only the recipient but also the giver.

As parents and caregivers, we can tie this lesson to Giving Tuesday by encouraging our kids to think about causes they care about. Whether it’s donating part of their allowance, volunteering time, or supporting a local organization, these small steps help children see the impact of their actions.

How to Celebrate Giving Tuesday with Your Family

1. Pick a Cause Together: Sit down as a family and discuss what matters most to you. Is it helping animals, supporting education, or feeding the hungry?

2. Set a Giving Goal: Encourage your children to set aside a portion of their savings or allowance for giving. Let them decide how much to contribute—it’s their choice that matters.

3. Volunteer as a Family: Giving doesn’t always mean money. Spending time at a local charity or organizing a donation drive can be just as meaningful.

4. Discuss the Impact: After Giving Tuesday, talk about how your contributions helped. This reinforces the value of giving and makes it more rewarding for children.

Bringing the Lesson Full Circle

When we teach kids about the joy of giving, we empower them to see money as a tool for good. Just as Bull and Bear learned from Piggy Banks, our children can learn that financial success isn’t just about building wealth—it’s about building a brighter future for everyone.

This Giving Tuesday, let’s help our kids take their first steps in giving. Not only will they create positive change, but they’ll also gain invaluable lessons that last a lifetime.
